The E Locus (MCIR gene)

The E locus (MC1R gene) plays a major role in determining coat color in Poodles. Dogs that inherit two copies of the recessive e allele (ee) are unable to produce black pigment (eumelanin) in their coat, resulting in shades that range from deep red and apricot to cream and white. The exact shade is influenced by additional genes that modify pigment intensity, causing some ee dogs to display a rich, vibrant red coat while others appear lighter apricot, cream, or nearly white. Although these dogs may have light-colored coats, they can still carry genes for darker colors and pass those colors to future generations when bred. The ee genotype is highly valued in breeding programs focused on producing the beautiful red, apricot, cream, and white Toy Poodles that are so popular today.
